HIGHER EDUCATION MENTORING

“I don’t think you could improve the help you have given to me, if you did any more you would be going to uni for me, so thank you!” – Year 12 pupil 2004

What is Higher Education Mentoring?

The Higher Education Mentoring scheme works with Sixth form students in Peterborough Schools and Colleges:

  • Who may feel that Higher Education is not available to them.
  • Who are first in their family to consider Higher Education.

What does the Higher Education Mentoring Scheme do?

The Higher Education Mentor will work with individual students on a regular basis and respond to each student’s needs. There are a number of ways the mentor can support the students:

  • Help with organising work
  • Help to plan homework, assignments and coursework.
  • Give guidance on a range of Higher Education opportunities.
  • Provide information on qualifications needed.
  • Help with any concerns the students may have.

The mentor can provide information and guidance to parents covering a range of questions and concerns such as:

  • The fees and costs of Higher Education
  • How fees or costs could be reduced
  • Higher Education courses available locally, regionally and nationally.
  • Career choices for their son or daughter to consider.
  • Qualifications needed for various careers.

Where and when do we meet?

Students will meet their mentor at an agreed time usually once every two weeks. Meetings usually take place in ‘free periods’, lunchtimes or after school. The meeting will take place at the school or college, often in the careers, Library or Interview room. Arrangements can be made to meet parents at a mutually convenient time and location.

How can you be sure that the Higher Education Mentoring scheme gives a quality service?

The national Mentoring Network has awarded the Approved Provider Standard to the Higher Education Mentoring Scheme. The Mentor has undergone police checks and has experience of working with young people.
